There’s all kinds of advice out there about how to get what you really want out of life and a lot of it is really good stuff. Today I’m giving my two-cents on the matter in very simple terms that are not always so obvious or popular. But I’m not here to win a popularity contest. I simply want to share a little wisdom that really works wonders when I actually follow it myself. Honestly isn’t that the key to life, consistently doing what we know to be true, good and right. It ain’t always easy or popular but it will ultimately get you results.
- Be flexible
We tend to find life more challenging when we stay attached to life unfolding a certain way. Being rigid and closed to other possibilities blocks what we’re really meant to have. The universe knows what we need better than we do and has impeccable timing on delivering what we need right when we need it most. Your job is to simply stay open and flexible enough to receive exactly what is best for you even when you have your own plan or vision of how you’d like things to be. Chances are there’s a better outcome in store for you when you remain flexible and open to receive your highest good.
- Say NO!
If you’re familiar with my blog you know I’m a big fan of the concept of saying NO to the people, commitments, and tasks that distract you from doing what you really want to do – that which is most important to you and will get you closer to achieving what you really want out of life. There are always going to be people and projects vying for your attention but that aren’t going to get you any closer to fulfilling your purpose or dreams. In other words, there are always going to be distractions that require you to say Yes or No to if you want to cultivate more of what you want.
Test any new requests or projects that come up using the D.I.V.E. guidelines that we talked about in the post D.I.V.E. Into Your Life. If it isn’t in line with what you want (desires), what you’re aiming to achieve (intentions), what’s most important to you (values), or how you want to feel (emotions) then feel free to simply say “NO” or if you want to turn someone down gently, say “I can’t commit to that right now.” And then get about the business of doing what you really want and need to do to get more of what you want out of life.
- Do less
I love the big idea that we can “do less and accomplish more,” which is counter-intuitive in a society that screams at us to “DO MORE,” “Get It Done,” and “Take Action NOW!” Doing less to accomplish more goes against the grain of what is expected of us. We have been programmed to always do more to accomplish more. In fact, if feels like we can never do enough and if society had its way we’d all be in perpetual motion to get it all done and overachieve. But doing more is not how you accomplish more especially if you are doing more of the wrong things. It’s best to operate from a very mindful place and figure out those vital few things you need to do to best accomplish what you really want to accomplish. And if you really want to flip the script…make a “NOT TO-DO List” instead of a “TO DO List,” and list all the things you need to stop doing that really aren’t that important or vital to fulfilling your true dreams and desires.
Here are two posts I wrote that speak to the idea of doing less to accomplish more:
Maybe you’ve heard the saying “winners never quit and quitters never win” but in true non-conformist fashion I say that it is completely okay to be a quitter. The truth is that sometimes you just have to quit things that are no longer working for you even when it’s impractical or unpopular. I wrote a post on giving yourself permission to quit even when it’s hard to walk away especially if you’ve invested a considerable amount of time, energy, money and other resources into pursuing a particular path. But it is always better to course correct and find your more authentic path than to stick with something that doesn’t honor your truth. In the short-term you may disappoint the people cheering you on from the sidelines but in the long-run you will be a true winner by being true to your self and going after what you really want not what others want for you.
- Be unreasonable
Take a stand and be unreasonable. If it feels right for your life and truly inspired then be unreasonable about doing whatever you are inspired to do, be, or have. When there are people who are saying it’s impossible or unrealistic or crazy then be crazy and do it anyway.
It’s okay to stand firm in your choices even when you don’t yet see how everything will work out because the Divine celebrates and acknowledges authenticity. When you take a stand for your truth the Universe will stand with you. So be unreasonable and do the thing everyone is telling you not to do or can’t be done, then get about the business of proving them wrong.
