“To understand yourself is the beginning of wisdom.” – Krishnamaurti
“An unexamined life is not worth living.” – Socrates
One of the first steps to creating a more fulfilling and joyful life is simply, Knowing Thyself. In other words having a deeper sense of self-awareness will allow you to make more authentic choices and take more authentic action towards fulfilling your dreams and vision for your life.
Questions to Live
I’ve created a personal manifesto for myself based on principles and truths I have learned in my forty plus years of living. The first of these is Know Thyself. “Who am I?” is the most fundamental question of your life. Some of you may be real clear about who you are but others are still searching. You can spend years trying to answer this question, constantly seeking a clearer understanding of who your most authentic self is and why you are here.
If you haven’t already it would be wise of you to start and continue asking yourself some fundamental questions to get at the core of who you truly are. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- What do you love?
- What are you passionate about?
- What work are you here to do?
- What resonates with you?
- What are your values? Core belief system? Guiding principles?
Only you know the answers. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the answers in this moment. The message here is to keep asking the questions and seek understanding of what feels real and authentic for you. Authenticity is key to living in the flow of your life and in order to be authentic you have to know yourself.
Know Your Life Purpose
A big part of knowing who you are is knowing what your purpose is. What are you suppose to be doing here? Not knowing the answer to this question means you’re just wandering around with no sense of life direction. Life is not very fulfilling down the road of aimless wandering. But know that even in the mist of wandering you can still stumble upon your true calling as long as your inner compass is on the lookout for what rings true for you.
Know Your Strengths
We all have individual strengths, gifts, talents, things we are good at and most suited for. When you know what you do best you can then look for opportunities and experiences that let you shine.
Know Your Values
Your core values define what is important to you and determine your behavior. Ultimately they direct your priorities, actions and how you invest your time, energy and money. They direct your commitments and decisions about what opportunities to pursue and what path to follow.
Know What You Are Resisting
Whatever you are resisting out of fear is most likely pointing to the very thing you should be doing. What we resist is often a clue to our most important work. Steven Pressfield tells us in The War of Art, that fear is a form of Resistance and that “fear tells us what we have to do….The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it.”
Methods of Discovery
Of course you can use astrology, psychic readings, and other astrological systems to assist you in discovering who you are but ultimately the truth lies within and can best be revealed through deep reflection. Be still and know. Listen for the subtle whisperings of your heart and soul. Trust that the conscious act to seek self-knowledge will reveal your truth in time.
There are also countless scientific personality and strengths tests out there to help you get some answers or better yet confirm what you already know to be true deep within.
Here are a few suggestions of tests I have tried and recommend:
Strength Finders – this test will help you identify your top 5 “signature strengths”
Fascination Advantage Test – this will help you discover how the world sees you
Jung Typology Test – based on Carl Jung’s and Isabel Briggs Myers’ typological approach to personality, this test will help you discover suitable careers
Self-Discovery is an ongoing process
Once you feel you have a clearer sense of who you are, know that self-discovery does not end. You are constantly evolving so this is an ongoing process but the important thing to remember is that knowing yourself means you are in tune with your inner compass which will guide you and give you a sense of direction.
Your job going forward is to follow that inner guidance and continue to:
- Get clear on where you are currently and what you want to create next
- Determine what’s working and not working for you so you can make adjustments and course correct
- Know what beliefs, mindsets, and behaviors are keeping you stuck so that you can change them
- Stay true to your values so that your choices and commitments are aligned with what is important to you
- Uncover and awaken your passions and dreams so you can live them fully in the world
- Awaken your authentic self so that you can make more authentic choices and communicate who you are in all you say, do, and be in the world
1. Be still and reflect on the questions above. Seek the answer to what your true calling is in life.
2. Take one of the test above to confirm your inner knowing.
3. Muster up the courage to name your calling below in the comments.
And of course…
Take care of YOU!
